Details, formula, and sources

Subtracts ideal and excess splitter loss, connectors, splices, and margin from a PON class budget, then converts the remainder to fiber reach at the worst operating wavelength. Every doubling of split ratio costs 3.01 dB: the worked 1:32 path reaches about 22.4 km, while 1:64 reaches 13.8 km. The applicable PON standard and component datasheets govern.

splitter loss = 10 log10(N) + excess; remaining fiber budget = class budget - splitter - connectors - splices - margin; reach = remaining/attenuation.

Logarithmic split loss and an entered PON optical-class budget. Class limits and component losses are not bundled.

A logarithm and additive dB budget.

Estimate. AHJ and licensed professional govern.
