Details, formula, and sources

ScopeBoiling temperature, the specific volume of the steam, the latent heat, and the enthalpy of the water and the steam. Steam at 100 psig boils at 337.9 F, takes 3.89 cu ft per pound and gives up 880.9 Btu per pound condensing. These are the figures the steam pipe, trap, flash and deaerator calculators ask for. Computed from the IAPWS-IF97 formulation behind modern steam tables, with a local atmosphere for altitude and negative gauge pressure for vacuum. Saturated conditions only, to 2,300 psia.

Formula or tableAbsolute pressure = gauge + atmosphere. Saturation temperature from IAPWS-IF97 Eq. 31. Saturated liquid volume and enthalpy (vf, hf) from the region 1 Gibbs equation, Eq. 7, and saturated vapor (vg, hg) from the region 2 Gibbs equation, Eq. 15, both evaluated at the saturation temperature and pressure: v = (R T / p) pi gamma_pi, h = R T tau gamma_tau, R = 0.461526 kJ/(kg K). hfg = hg - hf. Converted with 1 psi = 6,894.757 Pa, 1 Btu/lb = 2.326 kJ/kg, 1 cu ft/lb = 0.0624280 m3/kg.

The formulation behind the ASME steam tables since 1997.

Its computer-program verification values (Tables 5, 15, 35 and 36: 18 values of volume, enthalpy, saturation pressure and saturation temperature) are reproduced to 9 significant digits by this implementation, and a unit test holds them.
