Sized on the volume it actually occupies and split the way it actually leaves the building. Demolition debris does not stay the size it was on the wall. Carpet and pad in particular bulk enormously once they are cut out and rolled -- a factor of two to three is ordinary -- so a takeoff done on in-place thickness underestimates the container by that factor, which is why both numbers are printed and the container is sized on the loose one. The routing split is the part specific to Category 3, and it is the reason the liquid is reported separately rather than folded in. SOLIDS are bagged, sealed, and removed through the containment. LIQUIDS are the extracted water, they are the bigger number by weight on most losses, and they do not go in the box at all -- they are routed to sanitary sewer where the authority permits it, which is a question to ask before the truck leaves rather than after. A sewage loss with 500 sq ft of carpet and pad and 120 sq ft of half-inch board from a flood cut is about 26 cubic ft in place and 78 loose at a factor of three, which is 18 contractor bags and a 10 yard box that is under a third full. That last finding is the useful one, because the box was going to be ordered by habit. Volume, containers, and routing only. It does not weigh the debris, and weight rather than volume governs a haul on dense material -- the roll-off haul-count calculation handles that side and takes a debris volume as its input. Bulking factors are observational and vary with the material, how it is cut, and how it is rolled or folded. Whether Category 3 solids are ordinary construction debris or a regulated waste stream is a LOCAL determination that differs by jurisdiction and is worth a phone call, and sanitary discharge of extracted water requires the sewer authority's approval. This does not address containment construction, negative pressure, PPE, worker decontamination, or the antimicrobial and cleaning steps that precede removal.
