Siding Course Layout (Story Pole)
The layout half siding-takeoff defers: divide the wall into WHOLE courses and shrink the exposure evenly so the top course lands full instead of a sliver. A 9-ft wall at a 7-in target takes 16 courses at 6.75 in - and would otherwise end in a 3-in strip at the frieze. Checks the exposure ceiling (board height minus the manufacturer's minimum headlap) and notes that shrinking exposure only ever increases the lap. Starter and per-course LF included; squares and material are siding-takeoff.
Formula and source
courses = ceil(height/target exposure); adjusted exposure = height/courses (the story-pole mark); exposure ceiling = board height - manufacturer minimum overlap; starter = wall length; course LF = courses x length.
