Details, formula, and sources

ScopeDeposit% = D x base% + (1 - D) x filler% (D the dilution fraction). A 309L filler at 23% Cr onto carbon steel (0% Cr) at 30% dilution deposits only 16.1% Cr -- below the ~18% a 304-equivalent surface needs, which is why overlays run a low-dilution first layer or a second pass. Run it per critical element (C, Cr, Ni). One element, one pass; microstructure and ferrite come from a Schaeffler/WRC diagram. The WPS, filler certs, and base-metal MTR govern.

Formula or tabledeposit% = D x base% + (1 - D) x filler%; base_contribution = D x base%; filler_contribution = (1 - D) x filler%; shift = deposit% - filler% (D = dilution/100).

Source and editionThe standard welding-metallurgy dilution mixing rule for the as-deposited alloy composition, by name.

Free accessThe dilution mixing rule is a standard welding-metallurgy relation in AWS references and filler-metal literature; the base and filler chemistries are the user's own MTR/cert values. The WPS and the filler-metal data govern.
