It is the printed rating times a factor from the material's own table. The multiplication is trivial, and the reason it earns its place is that the printed rating is stated at 73 degF and almost nothing runs there -- a line rated 200 psi can be an 80 psi line at 120 degF, and a system designed to the number on the pipe is over its allowable from the day it is commissioned. THE FAILURE IS DELAYED, WHICH IS WHY IT IS MISATTRIBUTED. Plastic pipe ratings are based on long-term hydrostatic strength: sustained pressure and temperature together determine how long the pipe lasts, not whether it bursts today. A line run above its derated allowable does not fail on commissioning; it fails in a year or two, and the failure is blamed on the pipe or on a fitting rather than on the design. That delay is the entire reason the derating discipline exists. The factor is not one curve for all plastics and cannot be generalised. PVC falls sharply with temperature and is not rated above 140 degF at all. CPVC holds far more of its rating and is rated to 200 degF, which is the whole reason it exists and why hot water distribution is not done in PVC. PE and PEX have their own derating and their own long-term behaviour. So the factor is entered from the material's own published table rather than reproduced here, because a generic curve would be wrong for most of the materials it was applied to. The temperature LIMIT is a different kind of number from the factor. Above it a material is not rated at any pressure, and that is a hard stop rather than a steep derating -- a distinction worth keeping, because a small factor and no rating look similar in a table and are not similar in a system. And two things are not derating questions at all: compressed air in PVC is prohibited, because a brittle failure with stored gas energy is an explosion rather than a leak, and outdoor ultraviolet exposure degrades PVC in a way the pressure tables do not cover. Both are found on jobs where someone reasoned from the pressure rating alone. This applies an entered factor to an entered rating. It does not supply the factor or the temperature limit, distinguish continuous from intermittent service, address surge or water hammer (which plastic pipe handles differently from metal and which the derating does not cover), account for chemical compatibility, evaluate joints, fittings, or support spacing (which also derate with temperature), or determine what any code permits. The pipe manufacturer's published derating table for the specific material and the plumbing or mechanical code in force govern.
